Director Sylvain White is confirmed to direct Screen Gems' upcoming thriller about the Internet horror meme "Slender Man," which is scheduled to begin production this coming spring.

Sylvian White is widely known for his previous works in films such as "The Losers," "Stomp the Yard," and the thriller flick "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer."

As reported by IGN, Screen Gems secured the rights to produce a film inspired by the widely-known horror meme last year. The company will be producing the movie in collaboration with Mythology Entertainment, and it has tapped "13 Sins" writer David Birke to pen the script.

According to Movie Web, "Slender Man" started out as an internet meme back in 2009 on the Something Awful online forum. Eric Knudson, also known as "Victor Surge," is credited as the horror figure's creator.

Slender Man is depicted as a lanky, faceless figure who wears a black suit. The horror character is often associated with disappearance stories, with people claiming that it stalks and terrorizes children and teenagers.

The "Slender Man" phenomenon caused a moral panic back in 2014 when two 12-year-old American girls in Wisconsin lured a friend into the woods and stabbed her 19 times. The crime was allegedly committed for the appeasement of the faceless mythical entity, who the girls believed to be real.

HBO produced a true crime documentary about the incident titled "Beware the Slenderman," which is scheduled to make its TV premiere on Jan. 23. Directed by Irene Taylor Brodsky, the documentary is a sobering perspective on how an urban myth could affect impressionable young minds and convince them to commit a murderous act.

A video game titled "Slender: The Arrival" was also released back in 2013, which further perpetuated the popularity of the horrifying internet phenomenon.

The upcoming movie about the "Slender Man" has no official release date yet, but is expected to arrive sometime in 2018.
