'Star Wars Battlefront 2' release date, gameplay news: Sequel confirmed to have single-player campaign
"Star Wars Battlefront" fans will be happy to learn that the upcoming sequel of the action shooter video game will be coming with a feature that players sorely missed in the 2015 Electronic Arts (EA) title — a single-player campaign mode.
EA has confirmed that "Star Wars Battlefront 2" is already in development and that it is being produced by both DICE and Motive Studios. Earlier this year, EA's chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen shared the first details about the sequel. Recently, during an Achievement Oriented gaming podcast hosted by Channel 33, Justin McCully, senior brand manager for "Star Wars" at EA, also spoke about the upcoming "Star Wars" game.
McCully stated that he and the rest of the team are aware of the fans' feedback that the "Star Wars Battlefront" game experience was hampered by the lack of a story mode.
"We heard the fans loud and clear that the multiplayer was great, but it wasn't enough so they wanted that complete package. So the team has been very focused on delivering that single-player element," he said.
McCully also revealed why they chose not to include a single-player campaign to "Star Wars Battlefront." He said that it was because multiplayer gameplay was the core experience of game.
"That was the strategy of that title. And now as we expand in the universe we have better sense of what characters are coming into play, what stories we can tell, what stories are maybe being told in a film versus a game, that's where we've really ramped up the interaction with the [Lucasfilm Story Group] to bring those games to market," the EA executive explained.
It was previously announced that "Star Wars Battlefront 2" will feature content from the upcoming "Star Wars" movies and that its scope will be much bigger compared to "Star Wars Battlefront." McCully also shed light on their approach to upcoming "Star Wars" games which has largely been shaped by players' feedback.
EA is planning to give players the choice to hone their own stories within the game, which is different from the linear narrative that they see in the films and TV series. This is important because every "Star Wars" fan already knows the stories of well-established characters like Luke Skywalker. So, rather than just retelling his story and re-tracing his steps, players have a hand in shaping the character and what happens in the game.
Just like the expanding "Star Wars" cinematic universe, McCully stated that fans of the epic space opera franchise can also expect the same from EA.
"I think there's more that we can do. There's more than you're going to see from EA over the years to fulfill that entire fantasy of Star Wars that isn't just a blaster experience or an X-Wing experience, It's more than the sum of its parts," he concluded.
"Star Wars Battlefront 2" is currently slated for release during holiday 2017.
