'Star Wars Episode 8' plot news, spoilers: Maz Kanata's identity and how she got Luke's lightsaber to be revealed?
"Star Wars Episode 8" is more than a year from now, but new information about the film hits the web on a daily basis. The latest bit involves Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) lightsaber.
Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong'o) has the weapon hidden away in a chest. The last time the lightsaber was seen, it fell below Cloud City along with Luke's severed hand as he battled Darth Vader.
The new audio commentary by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams suggests that "Star Wars Episode 8" might reveal how Maz Kanata got a hold of Luke's lightsaber.
"There are other ways we can tell that story later," he said as quoted by MoviePilot. There is more to Maz Kanata and who she really is. Nyong'o will reprise the role in "Star Wars Episode 8."
Making this much more interesting is the possibility that Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) was in possession of the weapon even before Maz had it. A sequence for it, however, did not make it to the film.
It is said that there was a lot of trading that happened before Kylo Ren got the lightsaber, which he lost during battle, allowing Maz to retrieve it.
Clearly, there is more to Maz Kanata than meets the eye and if the reports are to be believed, "Star Wars Episode 8" will show a glimpse of who she is and her interests.
This lightsaber is expected to be a big part of the movie as well as Kylo Ren will do what it takes to retrieve it from Rey (Daisy Ridley), who will be training under Luke's tutelage come "Star Wars Episode 8.
Kylo Ren's journey on how he left his family to continue Darth Vader's plan for the galaxy far, far away is also rumored to be explored in the film.
"Star Wars Episode 8" will hit the cinemas Dec. 15, 2017.
