'Star Wars Episode VIII' plot news 2016: J.J. Abrams reveals that he cut Vader and Luke's fight in 'Force Awakens'
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" turned out to be a massive success, and it has gotten a whole new generation hooked to the sci-fi world of "Star Wars." In a commentary excerpt from the Blu-Ray collector's edition of "Force Awakens," director J.J. Abrams talked about a scene that he removed from the movie involving the classic duel between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).
Thanks to the "Star Wars Show" on Youtube, fans got a snippet from Abrams commentary track. The scene he commented on is the one where Rey (Daisy Ridley) walks in on Anakin Skywalker's old lightsaber and it triggers what Abrams' called a "Forceback."
The beginning of the sequence brought Rey back to the corridor in Bespin where Luke and Vader were having their fight and Abrams said, "There were many iterations of this. In one, from the Cloud City Corridor, she looked down and saw Vader fighting Luke, which we ended up cutting. We wanted it to be a more personal story, something that she couldn't comprehend, that was overwhelming to her, frightening to her."
The Forceback also included other elements from the original trilogy like Yoda's voice talking about the Force and Obi-Wan Kenobi speaking to Rey and saying that "these are your first steps." With the Bespin fight scene cut out of the movie, fans can only speculate what elements will be brought back for "Star Wars Episode VIII."
In an interview with Vulture, Ridlley hinted that "Episode VIII" might delve deeper into her character's parentage. A prevalent theory is that she is a descendant of fallen Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi. When she was asked about this, she said, "We will see in a year ... Just sit tight on that question."
Will Rey actually be a Kenobi or will she be a lost Skywalker child?
"Star Wars Episode VIII" hit theaters Dec. 15, 2017.
