'Star Wars Episode VIII' release date, speculations: New 'Ahsoka' novel reveals why Sith lightsabers are red

The road to the holidays is setting up the "Star Wars" fever among fans, and the new "Ahsoka" novel brings a lot of new information about the canon "Star Wars" universe.

Screen Rant has come up with a list of all the new information that comes from the novel, and one snippet explains the reason why Dark Side users only use red lightsabers unlike the Jedi who have either blue or green.

It turns out that the Kyber crystals — which are the main source of power for lightsabers — choose their Force users and these have a connection with whoever decides to put them in their lightsabers. Dark Side users don't have the same connection with the crystals, so the only way that they could obtain them is to either steal them or plunder them from defeated Jedi. By forcing the Kyber crystal to act on their will, the Dark Side user makes the crystal "bleed" and this act turns the blade red.

This opens up the world to a lot more speculation. If all red lightsabers have crystals that come from previous owners, then who could those owners possibly be? Who owned the crystal in Darth Vader's lightsaber when he started using a red one? Does Kylo Ren's (Adam Driver) lightsaber crystal come from someone important to him — possibly Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill)?

With that revelation, fans only hope that "Star Wars Episode VIII" delves deeper into Jedi culture. "Episode VIII" could possibly have Rey (Daisy Ridley) try to construct her own lightsaber in the movie. With her expertise in using a staff in "The Force Awakens," she could even construct a double-bladed saber much like Darth Maul's in "The Phantom Menace."

This December's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is also said to feature Kyber crystals as these power the Death Star. It also shows more of the planet Jedha, which is said to be a sort of a "holy city" for Jedi. Perhaps the movie can drop some hints that could later be useful in explaining "Episode VIII."

"Star Wars Episode VIII" hits theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.
