'Steven Universe' season 3 news, release date: 'Summer of Steven' premiere date remains a mystery
With "Steven Floats" remaining unaired in the U.S., fans of the quirky Cartoon Network animated series "Steven Universe" are beginning to wonder if and when the network will get around to airing the show's long-awaited third season, referred to as the "Summer of Steven."
"Steven Floats," which aired in France on May 22, is the final episode in the show's six-episode limited event dubbed "In Too Deep." The short run of "Steven Universe" episodes began airing in May with a special two-episode premiere consisting of "Super Watermelon Island" and "Gem Drill."
The six episodes of "In Too Deep" were supposed to be aired over the course of a month and were intended to be an intro of sorts for the third season of "Steven Universe."
"Steven Universe" season 3 was originally slated for a June premiere, with weekly episodes dropping from June to August — a period called the "Summer of Steven."
However, June is almost over and fans have yet to hear anything official from Cartoon Network or from "Steven Universe" creator Rebecca Sugar about an impending season 3 debut. Worse, "Steven Floats" has yet to air, which could mean that fans will have to wait a bit longer for the show's third season.
Fans need not worry, however, as Steven and the Crystal Gems are coming back for season 3. In fact, Entertainment Weekly broke the news back in March that Cartoon Network has renewed "Steven Universe" for two more seasons — season 4 and season 5, along with its other eccentric animated series "Uncle Grandpa."
In the meantime, a "Steven Universe" fan has posted what may be a teaser for season 3. It is allegedly titled "Too Short to Run."
"Steven Universe," which was brought to life by Sugar, a former "Adventure Time" animator, follows the life of a young boy named Steven and the three aliens who raised him — Amethyst, Pearl, and Garnet. Since debuting in 2013, the show has gained hordes of fans attracted by the show's light-hearted humor, whimsical atmosphere, and catchy songs.
Along with "Steven Universe" and "Uncle Grandpa," Cartoon Network has also renewed "Adventure Time," "Regular Show," and "The Amazing World of Gumball."
