Last week, Netflix granted the wish of hordes of "Stranger Things" fans when it gave the green light to a sophomore season for the summer streaming hit.

"Stranger Things," which stars '90s icon Winona Ryder, was critically acclaimed and widely praised on social media, becoming an unexpected sensation when it debuted in July. The Netflix supernatural/sci-fi series caught the attention of many with its homage to '80s pop culture, its riveting mystery, and its lineup of unforgettable characters, including Eleven, the young girl with psychokinetic abilities played by Millie Bobby Brown.

In a recent interview with Yahoo! TV, "Stranger Things" executive producer Dan Cohen said that season 2 will expand the world of "Stranger Things" and the number of characters featured, while also aiming to stay true to the essence of the Netflix series.

According to the "Stranger Things" boss, season 2 will be more than just a rehash of the first season; rather, it will raise the stakes and push for more.

"We want a sequel that feels like it's bigger and badder and darker while answering more of the questions and getting deeper into what's going on," Cohen said, adding that The Duffer Brothers, who created the series, want season 2 to be a great sequel that satisfies and also expands the show's original world.

"There's definitely a handful of really compelling new characters this season, but absolutely servicing the core group first and foremost," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

Cohen also revealed that due to the success of "Stranger Things," many famous people have reached out hoping to participate in future seasons of the show.

"The list of famous creative people — whether actors or filmmakers — who have found their way to the Duffers and I as fans of the show ... and you're right, certain actors that you have definitely heard of have raised their hand with real interest to be a part of it," he said.

Cohen explained that while there's a temptation to exploit the options open to them, they recognize that much of the appeal of "Stranger Things" is the "unknown quotient" of the actors, the plot, and the premise. Thus, just because a famous actor or actress wants to be in on the series doesn't mean that he or she can be a part of it.

"Stranger Things" season 2 is scheduled to be released in 2017 on Netflix.
