'Suicide Squad 2' premiere date, cast news, plot updates: El Diablo actor hopes for a comeback in sequel
Jay Hernandez, who played El Diablo in "Suicide Squad," is positive that his character can still return for the sequel. Meanwhile, no official plot updates have been announced for "Suicide Squad 2," but scenes from the first movie hint at possible directions.
"Suicide Squad 2" has already been confirmed, according to Movie Pilot, when Margot Robbie — who plays Harley Quinn — was announced to be appearing in David Ayer's upcoming all-female DC super-villain movie, "Gotham City Sirens."
The sequel is already under development, but won't be showing until after "Gotham City Sirens" hits theaters, putting "Suicide Squad 2" at a possible 2020 premiere date.
There has been no official news about who will join the cast of "Suicide Squad 2," but Hernandez, whose character died from self-explosion in the first film, is hopeful that El Diablo can still return.
"Let's just say he's a metahuman. What are you going to do? There are possibilities there. I'm not saying anything but, there are some possibilities. I haven't heard anything yet from anyone but even if I had, do you think I could tell you?" the actor teased to Variety.
Meanwhile, there are still no updates regarding what the "Suicide Squad 2" will have in terms of plot, but a few scenes from the first film hint at possible storylines.
In an interview with Collider, director Ayer shared that he chose "Suicide Squad" to end with the Joker (Jared Leto) breaking Harley Quinn out of jail because "it opens so many doors" for a story.
"I don't want to give stuff away but it's that anything is possible, and that's the thing, for as much control and commend Amanda Waller has over these guys, at the end of the day they're supervillains and they're gonna do supervillain stuff," Ayer explained.
Another scene that proposes a new storyline for the franchise is the one with Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) subtly hinting to Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) that she knows that he's really Batman.
This is the meeting where Waller and Wayne talk about the formation of the Suicide Squad, and Batman threatens Waller that he'll do everything to stop her, which could be the possible focus of the franchise's second film.
"Suicide Squad 2" is expected to premiere in 2020.
