'Supernatural' season 12 spoilers, news: The CW releases new trailer; showrunner speaks on Sam and Dean's future
"Supernatural" returns on Thursday, and a new trailer for the back half of season 12 has been recently released.
With an early renewal already in place, fans can rest assured that the Winchesters' fight against evil continues. The latest clip from The CW features most of the major characters while an ominous voice teases what comes next after Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean's (Jensen Ackles) run-in with Lucifer.
Dean declares his love for his family and best friend Cas (Misha Collins), while The British Men of Letters promise that the world will soon be free of sinister forces. Elsewhere, Cas mentions something about the world needing the Winchesters and promises to do everything in his power to keep them alive. At some point in the video, Mary (Samantha Smith) can be heard saying "I love you" followed by the sound of a gunshot.
Given Sam and Dean's hunting lifestyle, the two characters are obviously risking their lives every time they embark on a new mission. Dean is prepared to accept the consequences of the job, but Sam previously considered getting out of the game and building his own family. Both brothers have tried taking a different path, only to be pulled back to their trusty Impala.
Showrunner Andrew Dabb spoke with Entertainment Weekly, and he revealed that "what comes next" continues to be a big question this season. Over the course of 12 seasons, Sam and Dean no longer look forward to a world where they can step away from the supernatural world. Instead, they must figure out a way to find balance in their lifestyle.
"Sam doesn't want to stop making the world a better place, [but] Sam hopes they can get to the point where the world is such a good place that maybe they can take a step back from hunting," Dabb explained, "maybe they can either hand off the reins or be able to have a little bit more time [to] themselves," he added.
The 12th season of "Supernatural" returns Thursday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
