Suspect Arrested for Making Threats Toward African American Students on Mizzou Campus
A suspect has been arrested after reportedly threatening African American students protesting at the University of Missouri.
19-year-old Hunter Park, of Rolla, Missouri was arrested by campus police this week after he allegedly took to the social media site Yik Yak to threaten African American protesters at the University of Missouri.
Park, who is not a student at the school, has been charged with making a "terroristic threat" after threatening to "shoot every black person [I] see" at the Missouri campus on Wednesday.
The university's former Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin said via Twitter that the suspect had been apprehended and had never made it to the campus grounds.
"Have apprehended suspect who used multiple accts to threaten @Mizzou students. He was never physically near campus," the chancellor announced Wednesday.
Major Brian Weimer of the university's police department added in a statement that extra police officers were dispatched to the campus last night in response to the threats.
"We had additional officers on patrol last night and the campus remained safe," Weimer said in a statement. "We investigated a number of reports and tips and take every one of them seriously."
The arrest comes after University of Missouri president Time Wolfe and Chancellor Loftin announced that they would be stepping down from their posts in response to escalating concerns over racism on campus that some students believed were not being properly addressed by the administration.
The announcement of the change in leadership came shortly after graduate student Jonathan Butler ended a week-long hunger strike meant to protest alleged racism on campus.
