'Switched at Birth' season 5 episode 2 spoilers: Daphne, Mingo to get caught up in huge racism controversy
A controversial photo of Daphne (Katie Leclerc) and Mingo (Adam Hagenbuch) goes viral and divides the students at their university on the upcoming episode of "Switched at Birth" season 5.
Titled "This Has to Do With Me," next week's episode will see how one controversial photo explodes all over the internet. According to the official synopsis, a photo of Daphne and Mingo dressed up as their favorite musicians at a college costume party goes viral. Things quickly escalate as the duo finds themselves in the middle of a huge controversy that turns into a discussion of free speech and racism.
Meanwhile, Bay (Vanessa Marano) tries to get back on her feet by finding a job at a local tattoo parlor. Regina (Constance Marie) and Luca (Michael Galante) work together for a class project, while Kathryn (Lea Thompson) and John (D.W. Moffett) convince a new shortstop to join the UMKC baseball team.
Tuesday's premiere left off with Daphne taking a controversial photo that will launch this season's previously teased campus racism storyline. Series creator Lizzy Weiss recently spoke with TV Guide, and she shared how complicated the situation will get, particularly for Daphne.
"Daphne sort of, unwittingly, obliviously, a little bit gets thrown into the center of this race controversy because she's with Mingo and Mingo is dressed as African-American rapper Lil Wayne in a way that Iris feels is disrespectful to black culture," Weiss said, adding, "We shift and we really focus on the Daphne/Iris friendship."
Weiss went on to explain that episode 2 will center on strong intimate friendships built during an individual's college years. Viewers will see how Daphne and Iris (Sharon Pierre-Louis) will deal with a new challenge in their relationship as friends. "They're your family, you share everything in your dorm, and then something happens where you and your best friend absolutely cannot agree, it cracks the friendship," she added. "That's a really important relationship moving forward that I think is going to be hard to watch," Weiss went on to say.
The fifth season of "Switched at Birth" airs every Tuesday night at 9 p.m. ET on Freeform.
