Taliban Attack Kills 145, Mostly Children, At Army School In Pakistan
Taliban gunmen murdered at least 145 students and teachers during an attack on a Pakistani military school in Peshawar on Tuesday.
Members of the Pakistan Taliban reportedly gained entry to the well-known Army Public School and Degree College in Peshawar at around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, disguised as paramilitary Frontier Corps soldiers.
After gaining access to the school, the Islamic militants scaled a security wall and opened fire on the hundreds of teachers and students beginning their day of lessons at the school. Of the 145 pronounced dead, over 100 are said to be children.
Photos uploaded to social media show parents frantically swarming the school's front gates, waiting for their children to exit. One photo shows a piece paper listing the names of the dead being viewed by worried parents.
"My son was in uniform in the morning. He is in a casket now," Tahir Ali, a parent of a 14-year-old killed in the attack, told the Associated Press. "My son was my dream. My dream has been killed."
According to the New York Times, Peshawar has declared three days of mourning in light of Tuesday's brutal attack. Terrorist attacks had previously remained low in Pakistan after the government had vowed to fight the Islamic State, but the terrorist group had warned of potential attacks on public areas.
Pakistan's foreign ministry said in a statement that it was "deeply shocked" by Tuesday's attack, adding "these terrorists are enemies of Pakistan, enemies of Islam and enemies of humanity."
