'The Americans' season 5 spoilers news: Will it be a bust or escape for the Jennings? It'll be fight-or-flee for the KGB spies on American soil

The fourth season of FX's "The Americans" has just concluded, and the historical period spy show has been renewed for two more seasons before it finally comes to a series close.

Given the circumstances enveloping the Jennings in season 4, Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) will have to make the decision of a lifetime as their family is placed in worse danger and a more vulnerable position. Their deep cover identities well protected for so long are on the brink of being exposed. It will then be a question of whether the Jennings will be on the run and move to a different geographical location before the American authorities catch up on their secret business and track them down, or if they will decide to stay to regain their cover.

According to "The Americans" co-executive producer Joe Weisberg during his interview with TV Line, moving to some place else in the U.S. might not be a likely solution to the Jennings' security concerns. If the FBI finds out about them, the agency will still be able to trace them within the country even if they again resort to changing identities. Moreover, they have children who will have to do the same, which will be odd. Weisberg added that the option is something which the show already had a discussion about and ended up concluding that it will not make a great solution for the family.

In the finale episode of "The Americans" season 4, the spy couple's asset, William Crandall (Dylan Baker), was captured by the Federal authorities. Before he succumbed to death due to the bio-weapon he contaminated himself with, William did manage to divulge some information, although not altogether leak their true identities, to FBI agent Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) about Elizabeth and Philip.

Taking into consideration the worst that can happen, Elizabeth and Philip's handler Gabriel (Frank Langella) advised them that it is time to take their family back to Russia where an honorable welcome will be waiting for them.

"The Americans" season 5 will return on FX for a 13-episode run in 2017.
