'The Americans' season 5 spoilers: Showrunner hints 'great season' up ahead; what's next for Elizabeth and Phillip?
Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Phillip's (Matthew Rhys) relationship becomes stronger than ever when FX's "The Americans" returns with all-new episodes next year for its fifth season.
The critically-acclaimed drama is known for its great pacing and intense storyline. However, the lead characters' marriage has always been the heart of the series. From pretending to be a couple at first, Elizabeth and Phillip's romance blossomed into a real love over the course of the drama. The upcoming season is expected to air early next year, and showrunners Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg recently gave away a few details about what's next for the Jennings.
"They're doing their best as soldiers behind enemy lines trying to make it work and — in their view — making the world a better place.... In terms of their marriage, as challenging as things have been for them, they're in a good place," Fields told Entertainment Weekly. "Their marriage is actually as strong as its ever been," he went on to say.
Although fans should be happy that the story kicks off with the Jennings' marriage in a good place, the showrunners made it clear that it doesn't necessarily mean the ending for them will be just the same. While the duo didn't give specific plot spoilers, Weisberg gave fans a reason why they should tune in to the show's last two seasons.
"We've come to embrace the slow burn — such a slow burn that it may not even be burning at all," Weisberg explained. "It's not ramped up. It's not hyped up. It's not building the tension — but it will be a great season," he added.
Set during the 1980s Cold War era in America, FX's spy thriller follows two soviet spies who are living undercover with their family. The network already announced that the show is ending soon, with seasons 5 and 6 officially announced to mark the end of the program.
"The Americans" season 5 premieres in early 2017 on FX.
