'The Dark Tower' premiere date, cast news, plot spoilers: Film adaptation of Stephen King's novel series to finally hit theaters in 2017
"The Dark Tower" novel series of Stephen King was finally developed for a film adaptation, and it will premiere in 2017. The main characters, the Gunslinger and the Man in Black, will be played by Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, respectively.
According to Cheat Sheet, King's "The Dark Tower" novel series first became a film project back in 2007 under J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof as producers and directors. But the project did not have stability, even with production studios, so it was dropped in 2009.
Fast forward to 2015, Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital took on the project of "The Dark Tower" with director Nikolaj Arcel, and filming began thereafter in April of this year.
King shared with Entertainment Weekly how delighted he is about his novel finally becoming a film.
"The thing is, it's been a looong trip from the books to the film. When you think about it, I started these stories as a senior in college, sitting in a little sh-tty cabin beside the river in Maine, and finally this thing is actually in pre-production now," said King.
Based on the novel series, "The Dark Tower" follows the last living member of the Gunslingers named Roland Deschain, who will be portrayed by Elba in the film, and his journey in finding the Dark Tower.
Meanwhile, McConaughey will play the Man in Black, who is known as an ageless sorcerer also in search for the Dark Tower for his own selfish gain. He is also the Gunslinger's enemy.
According to King, the storyline of the film will not begin with the plot of the first book, "The Gunslinger," but rather in the middle. He shared that fans of the novel series should not be upset with the film's timeline because it will still revolve around the main story of "The Dark Tower."
King and Arcel are still keeping the secret of which books will be highlighted in the film, but Arcel did hint, "A lot of it takes place in our day, in the modern world."
King is also pushing to begin the film the same way the "The Gunslinger" began, with the words, "The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed," which he also posted on his Twitter account.
"The Dark Tower" is expected to debut on July 28, 2017.
