'The Last of Us 2' news: Game confirmed to be in development; Bruce Straley not returning as director
Sony finally revealed the first trailer for "The Last of Us: Part II" during Saturday's PlayStation Experience event.
The latest trailer kicks off with a scene featuring the woods before cutting to the logo of Naughty Dog. An unknown character begins to play guitar, and it's later revealed that she is Ellie. As she sings while playing the instrument, Joel walks into the house Ellie's in. The home was filled with many dead bodies, and Joel asks her if she wants to continue her plan. With blood dripping from Ellie's face, she promised to find and kill "every last one of them."
In a PlayStation Blog post, creative director Neil Druckmann shared his thoughts on the upcoming game following the first trailer's release. "I can't tell you how satisfying it is to finally be able to say that Ellie and Joel are back for another intense, harrowing, and emotional adventure... After spending years on different ideas (and almost giving up), we finally uncovered a story that felt special--a story that evolved into an epic journey."
"The Last of Us" was directed by Naughty Dog's Bruce Straley, but he won't be coming back to direct the second installment. Sony confirmed his exit from the project through a press statement to Kotaku, saying that Straley is on a break.
"Bruce recently decided to take some much deserved time off after shipping two critically acclaimed games in the last few years," the company stated. "He's looking forward to returning to the studio soon and jumping back in on his next project." As noted by the media outlet, Straley is currently on a yearlong sabbatical.
Sony and Naughty Dog have yet to announce a release date for the game. However, Sony's Shawn Layden mentioned in the trailer that the anticipated game is still in its early stages of development.
