'The Punisher' premiere date, cast & spoilers news update: Jon Bernthal to reprise role as the titular character; show to premiere in 2017

"The Punisher" is coming to Netflix in 2017, and Jon Bernthal plays the lead character in the series based on the Marvel comics of the same name.

Jon Bernthal first appeared as Frank Castle, or more commonly known as The Punisher, in "Daredevil" season 2 on Netflix. In 2017, he will reprise his role as Castle when "The Punisher" debuts on the streaming giant.

The show description from Netflix says, "After the murder of his family, Frank Castle is both haunted and hunted. In the criminal underworld, he'll become known as The Punisher."

Den of Geek reports that the evolution of Castle into becoming The Punisher will be the revealed in the Marvel solo hero series. Netflix has also announced who will be joining Bernthal in the cast of "The Punisher" and who they will be playing as in the series.

Daniel Webber plays Lewis Walcott, Jason R. Moore takes on the role of Curtis Hoyle, Paul Schulze plays Rawlins, Jamie Ray Newman portrays Sarah Lieberman, and Michael Nathanson takes on the role of Sam Stein.

Ben Barnes, who was previously rumored to be playing as Bobby Saint, will actually be joining the cast as Billy Russo, alongside Amber Rose Revah, who will play Dinah Madani, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach who will portray Micro.

Executive producer Steve Lightfoot shared how proud he is of their lineup for "The Punisher" series.

"We couldn't have asked for a more talented group of actors to round out the cast of Marvel's 'The Punisher.' It's a thrill to watch them each bring their characters to life with such layered, nuanced performances," shared Lightfoot.

Co-executive producer to Lightfoot, Jeph Loeb, added, "Each actors brings a special promise who surround Jon Bernthal's exceptional performance."

Deborah Ann Woll from "Daredevil" will also join "The Punisher" to reprise her role as Karen Page.

"The Punisher" is expected to premiere in 2017 on Netflix.
