Fans have been waiting on news about the return of Nina Dobrev in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8, and it turns out executive producer Julie Plec is also playing the waiting game with viewers.

The EP recently sat down with Digital Spy to discuss Elena Gilbert's highly-anticipated comeback in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 after being written off in the season 6 finale by being cursed to be in deep slumber so long as Bonnie (Kat Graham) is alive.

"She's said she would [come back] and I want her to. So honestly it becomes a matter of logistics and if we become victim to logistics, then that would be devastating. I'm hoping that's not even going to be an issue," Plec said.

She added that it would be "really emotionally disappointing" for "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 and the whole show itself to reach the finish line without Elena being a part of it.

Although she is hoping for the best, Plec also expects the worst by preparing an alternate ending for "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 with Elena out of the picture, which she hopes she will not end up using.

"Her character was the centerpiece, the heart and soul of the series, for so long that it would feel incomplete. That being said, I could do it that way, I just would prefer not to," she revealed.

When Dobrev left "The Vampire Diaries," the actress promised to Plec that she will be back at the end of the show, which is something that Plec is holding on to.

A few months back, The CW President Mark Pedowitz revealed that Dobrev is in negotiations about an appearance in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 although no update was provided ever since.

Elena is not the only character Plec plans to bring back. The EP plans to include in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 as many beloved faces as possible —"a lot of our dearly departed loved ones... and those that are still living."

It is a mystery at the moment if Elena will end up being one of those. For now, fans can look forward to episode 4, "An Eternity of Misery," airing tomorrow, Nov 11 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.

It will mark the return of Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig), who is roped back into the supernatural world after trying for so long to get past it.
