'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 spoilers: Nina Dobrev returning but not as Elena?
As fans wait for the "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 to air, fans and viewers of the show are treated to the news of Nina Dobrev returning to the series. The actress, who played Elena/Katherine in previous seasons, left the series after the sixth season.
This development is confirmed by the show's creator, Julie Plec. Dobrev's appearance would be at the finale event for the upcoming season, which is enough time to speculate who she will be returning as.
In an interview with TV Line, Plec said, "Obviously things can change throughout time, if the show goes on longer than we expect it to, or if we all collectively decide it would be fun to bring her back earlier, and she wanted to."
Some fans of The CW's hit series believe it is only fitting for Elena to return in order for her to gain closure from her relationship with Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder).
On the other hand, there are those who feel that it is no longer necessary for the character to return. They believe that Elena's exit allowed for a much-needed breather from scenes rehashing the relationship of Elena and Damon. It is said that her departure made it possible for the other characters on the show to gain more attention and to shine.
The common opinion though is of Elena's return, so that Damon can be set to rights after he was trapped in the Armory. He seems to have become no more than a beast, but her return may be an awakening for him and bring him back to his senses, finally realizing who he really is.
Those who are anticipating Elena's return believe Dobrev may be coming back as Katherine. With the series possibly ending with the next season as its last, Stefan's (Paul Wesley) storyline may lean toward being with Caroline (Candice King), allowing Damon to get back together with Katherine. This way, both brothers may get their happily-ever-after.
No confirmation is available as yet regarding which of the two characters Dobrev will come back as. Details may become available as the premiere of "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 nears. The release date is marked for Oct. 21 on The CW.
