'This Is Us' spoilers, plot news: Chris Sullivan talks about his character's fate in limbo

"Nothing bad ever happens on Christmas Eve," says Rebecca when the Pearsons found themselves holed up in the hospital following Kate's health scare in the midseason finale of "This Is Us." But while that saying seemed to hold merit in the past, things in the present are still in limbo for the clan as they celebrated an early Christmas dinner that ended in what could be a potential death.

As usual, the episode jumped back and forth in time with the family celebrating the holidays in two quite different but still connected situations. As Jack and Rebecca rush their only daughter into the hospital, the family reunites with Dr. K, who is not doing well for himself too. Both Kate and the good doctor were in the clear before the credits rolled, but someone from the present time may still be in danger as the show leaves Toby (Chris Sullivan) on a hospital bed still unconscious.

Entertainment Weekly patched up with the actor in hopes of scoring some clues on what the future lies for his character. And while the odds are not really in getting a slip from him, he hints that Toby's condition is not to be taken lightly.

"We can never underestimate the emotionality of This Is Us," Sullivan said. "Just when you think you don't have another tear to cry, we will find a way. We will find all of your tears. We will dig down deep, and we will yank them out, whether you like it or not."

Surely, his current situation is not very ideal especially when he and Kate have just patched things up from quite a telephone conversation in the penultimate episode of the midseason finale. And at this point, fans can only hope that Toby survives as he gives her the kind of support she needs, bar the disagreement in terms of losing weight.

In a separate conversation with Sterling K. Brown, who plays Randall, the actor reveals that should the folks behind "This Is Us" decide to axe Toby from the series, he will be one with the fans in getting frustrated about it. "People will be pissed. If Chris Sullivan does not make it beyond episode 10, I think people will be quite distraught — Chrissy Metz probably being at the top of that list, but not far behind will be Sterling K. Brown and all the rest of the cast," the Emmy award-winning actor stressed.

Find out what eventually happens to Toby and how the Pearsons will be taking it when "This Is Us" returns for the latter half of its debut season on Jan. 10, 2017.
