Tim Tebow news: The Columbia Fireflies wants Tim Tebow
It may be difficult for Tim Tebow to get into the Major League Baseball (MLB) right now, but the former Heisman trophy winner may be joining a minor league team in the near future. Not bad for an athlete who hasn't played baseball full-time since he was a junior in high school. And that was way back in 2005.
Broadcaster Kevin Fitzgerald, the voice of the Columbia Fireflies, has revealed to WACH FOX that the Columbia, South Carolina-based team has plans to sign Tebow. "Over the last week or so, the odds of (Tebow) starting here have greatly increased," he stated.
Fitzgerald also said Mets general manager Sandy Alderson wants Tebow to "start at a full-year minor league camp, which would eliminate the possibility of him beginning the year with a short-season or rookie-level affiliate."
Meanwhile, Columbia-based publication The State spoke with Fireflies president John Katz and he said there was a good chance Tebow would be in wearing a Fireflies uniform when the season starts.
"Odds are pretty well in our favor that this could be the natural starting point, and depending on how he does here, he could progress up the chain," Katz stated.
This makes sense because the team is an affiliate of the Mets, and Tebow can hone his skills there when he starts his baseball career. The State has noted that a team one level above the Fireflies in Port St. Lucie was also interesting in his services, but Katz believed that signing with his team would be the best choice for Tebow.
"He would have a better time building his confidence against Class A pitching before moving up to a more advanced class in Port St. Lucie," Katz said.
Meanwhile, don't expect the Montreal Alouettes to sign Tebow if he ever decides to return to football. Sportsnet has reported that the Alouettes' new general manager, Kavis Reed, has decided to drop Tebow off their confidential negotiation list days after he got the job.
