'Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan' plot news 2016: John Krasinski says 10-part 'Jack Ryan' series will tackle ISIS
"The Office" alum John Krasinski is taking on the role of Tom Clancy's fictional CIA analyst Jack Ryan in a 10-part television series that will reportedly tackle ISIS in its first year.
Last week, Amazon announced that it has given a full series order to the new series, which will follow Ryan as he is sent into a dangerous field mission. The popular character, which has appeared in many of Clancy's novels and their respective film adaptations, has been portrayed by Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, and others.
Krasinski, who gained fame playing the charming Jim Halpert on NBC's "The Office," takes on the Jack Ryan mantle after showing off his action star chops in this year's "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi."
Carlton Cuse, who has worked on "Lost," "Bates Motel," and "Colony," will serve as the showrunner for the "Jack Ryan" series. The upcoming show will reportedly be more of a reinvention than a strict adaptation of Clancy's Jack Ryan novels.
In an interview with Deadline, Krasinski spoke about the upcoming series, saying that the 10-episode format gives them the opportunity to better depict Ryan's intelligence and richness of character.
"In a 10-part series," he explained, "you'll be able to follow along with Jack Ryan as he deciphers things and really gets to the heart of them. That will be a huge plus in making us different from the other ones."
Speaking with Collider, the actor said, "I think that they're not even really considering it a TV show, they're calling it a movie that's being told in 10 parts."
"Carlton Cuse's whole plan is we're gonna shoot it on a movie budget, we're gonna have the same stunts as movies, it's gonna feel like a movie but you're gonna watch it every week," he added.
Krasinski also revealed that the series will tackle real-life issues, beginning with ISIS. According to the actor, while each season of the series will deal with a different topic, ISIS will definitely be the first season's focal point.
Amazon has not announced the official release date for the upcoming Jack Ryan series.
