'Tomb Raider' release date, news: Walton Goggins' character is a complicated villain
Last week, Walton Goggins was cast as the villain in the "Tomb Raider" reboot film opposite Alicia Vikander. Aside from the fact that he's going to be playing the main antagonist of the film, not much is known about the role. Fortunately, Goggins is more than willing to share some details.
In an interview with Yahoo Movies, Goggins talked about how his character was going to be a complex villain.
"Is he a villain? Sure, that is an easy description. An antagonist, for sure. But [like other characters] I have been so lucky to have the opportunity to play over the course of my career, there are real reasons behind his antagonism, and it's not what you'd expect. He is very complicated, and his motivations are pure."
Well, the best villains are usually the ones who think they are doing the right thing, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Right now, the character's name and backstory are yet to be revealed.
During the interview, Goggins threw heaps of praise on director Roar Uthaug and co-star Vikander, and he also said that the film's storyline was "so good." "For me, it's like Raiders of the Lost Ark meets a genre version of the Joseph Conrad novel Victory: An Island Tale. I just jumped at the chance," he stated.
Interesting comparisons. Comparing the movie to an "Indiana Jones" film and "Victory: An Island Tale" will certainly turn some heads.
The latest film adaptation of "Tomb Raider" is going to be based on the 2013 reboot game, and the Lara Croft in the film is not going to be the hardened adventurer fans have seen in the previous "Tomb Raider" movies. Lara's going to be a novice in this film and she's going to be searching for her father.
"Tomb Raider" is scheduled to premiere on March 16, 2018.
