'True Detective' Season 2 Spoilers, New Trailer: 'Sometimes Your Worst Self is Your Best Self'
The initial trailer released last month for the second season of "True Detective" was moody and without any dialogue. Nic Pizzolatto's drama has a new trailer out, and finally the characters' voices are heard. However, what they are saying is still dark and depressing.
"Sometimes your worst self is your best self," says Frank Semyon, Vince Vaughn's character, a criminal and entrepreneur. In both trailers, and we assume, the whole series, Vaughn will be leaving his comedian side by the wayside and will exercise his dramatic acting chops instead.
Rachel McAdams' character, Ani Bezzerides, says, "This girl's gone missing. Nobody cares. The interior is poisoned and suddenly worth billions. Nobody cares."
McAdams is seen deglamorized, with a blunt haircut, handling a gun and knife and sporting mostly regulation police wear – a very far cry from her normal roles in the movies.
Season 2 takes place in Southern California. The series also stars Colin Farrell (as crooked detective Ray Velcoro) and Taylor Kitsch (as Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle cop for the California Highway Patrol). Both Farrell and Kitsch are well-known movie stars, same as Vaughn and McAdams. It would be interesting to see how they fare on the small screen, essaying roles they are not normally associated with.
The story starts when a bizarre crime brings together the three different law enforcement officers and a career criminal (Vaughn), who must navigate a web of conspiracy and betrayal.
Character posters were also released recently, with the four main characters' faces cut off from the nose up. All the posters had the tag line, "We get the world we deserve."
Justin Lin directs the first two episodes of the season, which premieres on June 21 on HBO.
