'True Detective' Season 3 air date, spoilers, news & update: There are plans for a third season; Cary Fukunaga not returning
Though the first season of HBO's "True Detective" was met with critical acclaim, the second season didn't have quite a stellar run, which may have led to the murky continuity of the show for the third season. Reports are saying, however, that a third season has been planned out, and production is just waiting for the right team to pick it up.
According to reports, HBO's head of programming Casey Bloys has confirmed that there are plans for a third season. As of now, the series is in need of writers, and they will be collaborating closely with show creator Nic Pizzolatto.
Any fans who want to see the return of season one director Cary Fukunaga shouldn't keep their hopes up either, since Fukunaga has reportedly declined to go back to the series. Fukunaga only signed up for one season of the show, but the second season's drop in ratings may have affected his return to "True Detective."
Fukunaga has also explained that he only signed up for the first season in order to experiment in the noir genre. "I feel like I have done the noir. There is no noir currently in my slate so if I ever get that itch again, maybe. But not for now," he said at the 18th Jio MAMI Mumbai film festival.
Each season of "True Detective" focuses on a different story and cast of characters with only the shared theme that is detective noir. The first season had big-name stars like Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Though they didn't return for a second season, the show saw a new cast with Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams.
No official release date for a third season of "True Detective" has been announced, but some predict that HBO will most likely air it come 2018.
