'True Detective' season 3 renewal news: HBO not closing its doors on show
HBO has not talked about the possibility of "True Detective" season 3 since the tepidly received second season of the series ended last year. Now, the network finally broke its silence.
It turns out that HBO still has plans for the anthology. "It's not dead. We are hoping for a third season. It's a very valuable franchise for us," HBO head of programming Casey Bloys said via Deadline.
However, he emphasized that they are still figuring things out on what story to tell in "True Detective" season 3 and how it could come to fruition. "I'm not sure we have the right take for a third season yet," he said.
He added that with "True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolato busy with other things, he might pass the writing duties to someone else and supervise instead.
"I talked to Nic about it and both Nic and HBO are open to another season. I don't think Nic has a take and he's working on some other projects," Bloys explained.
With that said, it appears that there are no concrete plans for "True Detective" season 3. This means that, should it happen, it will take a while before fans get to see it.
The second season of "True Detective" that starred Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and Taylor Kitsch did not do as well as the first one, which was led by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
McConaughey recently spoke about his "True Detective" character Detective Rustin Cohle. He implied that he approached HBO to talk about possibly slipping into the role despite its anthology format.
However, at the moment, nothing is set in stone yet. For now, it is safe to say that HBO will push out "True Detective" season 3 in the future.
When that will happen is another story, but fans can hope that it will better than the second season, with HBO learning from its mistakes.
