"True Detective" quickly went from being one of HBO's biggest hits to its greatest flops in just two runs, making a season 3 renewal in limbo.

HBO has recently said that "True Detective" is still very much alive although they have no concrete plans for it yet.

HBO programming president Casey Bloys said that they are willing to hire new writers for "True Detective" season 3 since Nic Pizzolatto will be working on other projects.

One of these projects reportedly involves a "Perry Mason" reboot with Robert Downey Jr. rumored to play the role. Pizzolatto has also recently worked on "The Magnificent Seven" so he is a very busy man.

He is signed up with HBO up to 2018 though, but the preparation for the aforementioned reboot could take all that up, which is why HBO is looking for new writers instead.

"I talked to Nic about it and both Nic and HBO are open to another season. I don't think Nic has a take and he's working on some other projects," Bloys said at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

"We're open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It's a valuable franchise, it's not dead, we just don't have a take for a third season yet," he continued.

With that said, it appears that it will be a long wait before "True Detective" season 3 sees the light of day. HBO is currently focused on its new series "Westworld," which is the network's biggest premiere in years.

The adaptation matched the level of viewership that the pilot episode of "True Detective" garnered, which means that the HBO has another series to take care of.

With regards to the possibility of "True Detective" season 3, fans can expect that it will be very different from the other ones with new writers whipping up the story.
