Matthew McConaughey was one of the main characters of "True Detective's" maiden season, and there was no doubt he contributed much to the success of the series. Now it looks like he wants to return to the series. Can he save "True Detective" season 3 from its impending fate?

"True Detective" held much promise after the first season completed its run, and fans of the HBO crime anthology hoped its succeeding runs would fare as well. Unfortunately, the second season of the show was not received warmly even though it boast of a stellar cast which included Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn.

It was recently reported that Michael Lombardo, then head of programming at HBO, admitted that they pushed writer and showrunner Nic Pizzolatto to work on "True Detective" season 2 quickly to cash in on the success of its predecessor. That could have been why the second season failed in sustaining the hype.

However, Vanity Fair reported that the 46-year-old McConaughey was recently on "The Rich Eisen Show," and there, he said that he had talked to Pizzolatto about reprising his role as Detective Rustin Cohle should HBO decide to do "True Detective" season 3.

"Yeah, I would consider [going back]. I miss Rust Cohle, man," he apparently said during the interview. "I miss watching him on Sunday nights, I miss watching 'True Detective' on Sunday nights."

"I was a happy man when I made that for six months, because I was on my own island," the actor added. "Luckily my wife put up with me ...But yeah, I would."

According to Screen Crush, McConaughey and Pizzolatto discussed the possibility of his return as long as things are in "the right context, the right way."

HBO's reservations about giving the series a third season are understandable considering the lukewarm reception season 2 got from viewers. Talking to "The Frame," Lombardo dished on the show's failure.

"I'll tell you something," the executive said. "Our biggest failures — and I don't know if I would consider 'True Detective 2' — but when we tell somebody to hit an air date as opposed to allowing the writing to find its own natural resting place, when it's ready, when it's baked — we've failed."

Now that McConaughey has expressed his interest to be cast in "True Detective" season 3, fans are hoping HBO won't turn a blind eye and consider giving the show a chance.
