'True Detective' season 3 updates: Series renewed until 2018; third run still hinging on Nic Pizzolatto's decision
Fans of the star-studded anthology crime drama "True Detective" have been waiting expectantly for its comeback on the small screen albeit a somewhat disappointing second season. The final episode of the second run aired on Aug. 9, 2015, almost a year ago today. Word has it that the project has not taken off until now despite HBO having given a third season a go signal. This is because the decision to proceed hinges on Nic Pizzolatto, the executive producer for the show.
Although Pizzolatto already signed an overall deal with HBO late last year effective through 2018, no movement has been seen for an upcoming run. This means that the show has until that time to take off considering some reports that a new showrunner is now being sought to see a new season to fruition.
That, however, is as far as it has gone since. Fresh word from Pizzolato is still being anticipated to confirm whether in fact there will be a "True Detective" season 3. It is anybody's guess though if the project will get to move forward considering that, besides being expected to envisage a new way to push a third season for "True Detective" forward, Pizzolato also needs to pursue other projects for the network.
The executive producer was given three options upon contract-signing. Keeping in mind the search for a different approach to the hit series, he could decide to keep the status quo by writing the entire season himself, as he did with its sophomore season. A second option would be to bring in a team of writers, while the third is to hire a new showrunner.
If the reports are true about a new showrunner, the hold-up may then be attributed to Pizzolatto possibly still trying to decide what "True Detective" season 3.
In that case, fans of the series are in for more of the waiting game.
