'Vikings' Season 4 Renewed or Canceled? History Channel Renews for Season 4 After Drawing 4.3 Million Viewers
Running with pretty good luck with its miniseries, the History Channel has renewed "Vikings" for a fourth season.
History made the announcement with only five episodes remaining in the current third season, which has reportedly drawn a total of 4.3 million viewers worldwide.
Roma Khanna, president of Television Group and Digital at MGM, thanked Michael Hirst for the success of "Vikings," which is considered a heavy hitter in History's short list of miniseries.
"Vikings is a tremendous success worldwide, thanks to the visionary talents of Michael Hirst, the entire creative team and our partners at History," Khanna said, according to Entertainment Weekly.
"We look forward to entertaining audiences worldwide with the next epic season," Khanna added.
The next season will reportedly begin filming in Ireland soon.
Cinema Blend said "Vikings" has been down in the ratings a bit during Season 3, but there are still well over 2 million viewers who tune in for each episode live.
Cinema Blend clarified that the show is the number 1 scripted cable program in Live+3 ratings, averaging 4.3 million viewers.
"It might seem a bit preemptive to call a renewal well before Season 3 ends its run, but part of the reason for the renewal also may have to do with the fact that the program shoots in Ireland and production on the series will actually begin this spring," Cinema Blend said.
"Renewing the series means the creative team can officially begin to plan ahead. So, all things being equal, early is definitely more convenient and could actually lead to better episodes down the line," it added.
"Vikings," which began airing on History in 2013, depicts the adventures of a band of brothers in the Dark Ages, one of whom became king of the Viking tribes. Travis Fimmel, Clive Standen, and Gustaf Skarsgård star in the drama.
Last week's episode showed the Viking crew plotting to head up to the Seine to attack Paris, Cinema Blend added.
The season finale will air on April 23. Luckily, if the last two seasons are any indication, we'll probably be seeing a 10-episode season next year.
