Former American football star and Hall of Famer Warren Sapp has been arrested for soliciting prostitution and for assault in Phoenix, Arizona. His arrest was confirmed by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, which noted that he was arrested at around 7 a.m. local time on Monday.

Sapp, 42, formerly played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders and was included in the 2013 Hall Of Fame.

The police made the arrest after receiving a call from the Renaissance Hotel seeking police action about an alleged noise disturbance inside the facility, Phoenix Police spokesperson Trent Crump said.

Responding police officers found a woman inside the hotel who claimed that a guest had assaulted her and another woman who had already left the facility.

The police noticed that she had several minor injuries. The woman said she and the other woman were "escorts" and that a dispute had arisen about payment in one of the guest rooms and that the wrangling reached the hallway of the hotel.

Upon investigation, the police learned that the guest was Sapp who was subsequently arrested on assault and soliciting prostitution charges. Sapp reportedly told investigators that he had already made a payment to one of the women but denied that he assaulted them.

Both women were also charged following the incident, one for engaging in prostitution and the other who was found in a hotel in Peoria for violating laws governing escort services.

Following his arrest, Sapp was summoned to appear in court later in the day and was subsequently released. He was ordered to return to court on Feb. 23.

Sapp was in Phoenix as part of the staff of NFL Total Access and NFL GameDay Morning. After his arrest the NFL Network immediately terminated him.

This was the second time Sapp got into trouble around the time of the Super Bowl. Earlier in 2010 he was arrested on a charge of domestic battery, but the case was later dropped. Last year he was again arrested for battery but nothing resulted from those charges.
