'Wicked' film adaptation cast news 2016: Who will play Glinda, Elphaba? Kristin Chenoweth chooses her top picks
Following last month's announcement of the "Wicked" film adaptation, fans of the hit Broadway musical have been wondering if Kristin Chenoweth, who played Glinda, and Idina Menzel, who played Elphaba, could possibly be reprising their roles for the film.
"Wicked," which revolves around the friendship between Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, is a prequel to "The Wizard of Oz." The musical has broken records, earned billions, and won multiple awards. Menzel has won the Tony Award for Best Actress for her role in the musical. Chenoweth was nominated in the same category for hers.
Given that Menzel and Chenoweth are famous for their "Wicked" roles, it would make sense for the two Broadway heavyweights to star in the film adaptation as well. However, "Wicked" begins with Glinda and Elphaba's first antagonistic encounter in college. Menzel and Chenoweth are both currently in their 40s. The pair's age could pose a problem for their "Wicked" film casting.
In a recent interview with People, Chenoweth spoke about the possibility of starring in the film.
"I know there's been news of the movie, and I would love to be in it in any capacity," she said. "Maybe I'll play a munchkin this time."
As for the possibility of reuniting with Menzel for the film, she said that she and her co-star have "left their mark on their roles and want to leave it there."
The actress also spoke about who she would cast as Glinda and Elphaba in the film adaptation.
"For someone in their 20s, I would go for Dove Cameron [as Glinda] and Lea Michele [as Elphaba]," she told VH1 in May, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly. "Someone in their 30s, I would go with Beth Behrs [as Glinda] and maybe Zooey Deschanel [as Elphaba]."
Last month, Universal announced that it had set Dec. 20, 2019 as the release date for the feature film adaptation of "Wicked."
According to Deadline, the musical's journey to Hollywood has been a long one. Director Stephen Daldry was attached to the film way back in 2012.
