'X-Men' movie release date news: 'The New Mutants' to start filming in spring 2017?
A new installment in the "X-Men" movie franchise is said to be filming next year. While 20th Century Fox has yet to make an official announcement, its director has seemingly confirmed its development.
In the past few days, news about the seventh "X-Men" film's production spread like wildfire. Le Journal de Montréal reported (via Den of Geek) that filming was to once again take place at MELS Studios in Montreal just like the past two installments, "Days of Future Past" and "Apocalypse." Set construction was said to begin in January 2017 with filming slated for spring. Unfortunately, there was no concrete evidence referring to which movie was going to be filmed.
Then, sometime later, director Josh Boone seemingly confirmed that the new "X-Men" film in the pipeline would be "The New Mutants."
Per Collider, the development of "The New Mutants" makes sense as it could possibly serve as a soft reboot for the franchise. This is said to be due to the disappointing performance of "Apocalypse." While the movie earned a respectable $543.9 million in the box office, it pales in comparison to "Days of Future Past's" $747.8 million. Furthermore, stars like Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and Nicholas Hoult have reached the end of their three-picture contracts and have yet to renegotiate with the studio.
No cast members have been announced for "The New Mutants" but based on Boone's social media posts, viewers could possibly see the likes of Magik, Wolfsbane, Mirage, Cannonball, Sunspot and Warlock. These characters are teenage mutants that have graduated from Professor Charles Xavier's school, the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.
"Game of Thrones" actress Maisie Williams is rumored to be a front-runner for the role of Wolfsbane, and Anya-Taylor Joy and Nat Wolff for the parts of Magik and Cannonball, respectively.
"The New Mutants" does not have an official release date yet, but an "Untitled Marvel/Fox Film" is slated for March 2, 2018.
