'Young Han Solo' movie release date, cast news: 'Atlanta' star Donald Glover cast as Lando Calrissian
A lot of "Star Wars" fans are looking forward to Phil Lord and Chris Miller's "Young Han Solo" spin-off film, and there were rumors going around that Donald Glover ("Atlanta") was the top choice to play space rogue, Lando Calrissian. Well, it's finally official, because Glover has been cast as the new Lando.
Lucasfilm made the announcement and directors Lord and Miller said, ""We're so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us... These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we'd like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever."
Glover will be joining Alden Ehrenreich who will be playing the titular Han Solo, but no details have been released on exactly how much of a role Lando will have in the upcoming movie. Rumors have come up that the movie will show how Han was able to win his ship, the Millennium Flacon, from Lando in a game of sabacc.
The role of Lando Calrissian was originally played by actor Billy Dee Williams in "The Empire Strikes Back." After the events of Cloud City, Lando was recruited in the Rebel Alliance and he was the one who piloted the Falcon and helped destroy the second Death Star in "Return of the Jedi."
Glover is probably best known for his role as Troy Barnes in NBC's hit comedy, "Community." He has since then moved on to other projects, even establishing his own rap career with the alias Childish Gambino. As of now, he stars in an FX series called "Atlanta," a show which Glover himself helped create.
Glover has some very big shoes to fill for the role, but fan reception of his casting has been positive so far.
The untitled "Young Han Solo" movie is set for release on May 25, 2018.
