'Better Call Saul' season 3 spoilers update: Series to go beyond 'Breaking Bad' storyline?

Could "Better Call Saul," the prequel/spin-off to the cult favorite "Breaking Bad" ever go beyond its source material?

During the "Breaking Better Call Saul" panel at the recent Vulture Festival, "BCS" creator Peter Gould seemed hesitant to confirm that the spin-off will stick to the story outlined in "Breaking Bad."

"I don't think anything is predetermined," he said. "Even with 'Breaking Bad' we had a story that was set up from the beginning: Mr. Chips turns into Scarface. This show we have Jimmy McGill becomes Saul Goodman, which in some ways seems not as extreme of a journey, a different kind of journey."

"Better Call Saul" was released in February 2015 as a prequel/spin-off to the popular "Breaking Bad," the massive following of which tuned in for the "BCS" premiere and made it, at the time, the highest-rated scripted series premiere in basic cable history. The series follows Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk), known in "Breaking Bad" as the tacky lawyer Saul Goodman, as he transitions from a small-time lawyer to a morally corrupt goon working for criminals.

Having wrapped its second season in April, "Better Call Saul" has proven to be a successful spin-off, with fans clamoring for more episodes of the show.

Speaking with Den of Geek, Odenkirk, who plays the titular character in "BCS," said that stepping into the spotlight took some getting used to but that he wasn't intimidated until the network began putting his face on huge billboards. The acting part, however, was another story, the actor said.

"That s— was easy," Odenkirk told the outlet.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Odenkirk said that reprising his role in "BCS" was a risk but that he really didn't have much at stake.

"I had no status in this world as a dramatic actor that I could lose," the actor explained. "...I was lucky enough not to have been famous enough as a comic actor that I had anything to work against."

The third season of "Better Call Saul" will premiere sometime in 2017 on AMC.
