'Girl Meets World' season 4 spoilers, plot news: Disney set to replace Maya and Riley in season 4?

The current season of "Girl Meets World" is still airing, but this early, fans are already wondering if a fourth season will happen for the coming-of-age situational dram-com.

Earlier reports claim that Disney is having second thoughts about renewing the series for a fourth season considering the lead characters are not getting any younger. Apparently, the network realized that soon, Riley (Rowan Blanchard), who plays the main character on the series, and Maya (Sabrina Carpenter) will soon become young adults with more pressing issues to tackle.

There were speculations that Disney was considering ditching the series to Freeform, which can accommodate a more mature storyline for "Girl Meets World." Disney Channel, where the show currently airs, caters to young audience and a mature storyline will not fit in with the network's target audience. Otherwise, the network might consider casting new actors to replace Blanchard and Carpenter.

Blanchard, for her part, revealed that even cast members are unaware of the direction the series is going. Until now, not a single cast member knows whether the series will be renewed, cancelled, or moved to Freeform.

In an interview with SheKnows.com, Blanchard admitted that all cast members are cloaked in ambiguity as they wait to see the fate of the series.

"I know as much as you do. We are hoping for a Season 4, obviously, because we want to continue our story, and I feel like it's an important story to tell," she said. "But as of right now, we just finished [filming] Season 3 and we're still waiting on the word. But we do have more episodes coming out this year that air into early 2017, so we're covered for a little bit."

Carter Matt notes that filming for "Girl Meets World" season 3 has wrapped up some time ago, and now, fans and viewers of the series are anticipating Disney Channel's next move. Be that as it may, the season 3 finale has been written in a way that it will serve as a fitting end for the show in case the network does not renew it.

The show has been on hiatus since Aug. 26, but reportedly, "Girl Meets World" season 3 episode 13 titled "Girl Meets The Great Lady of New York" will air on Sept. 16.

Meanwhile, keep coming back for more news and updates about "Girl Meets World" season 4.
