"Gotham" fans have been speculating that instead of introducing the Joker himself, the crime series will instead feature his love interest/sidekick Harley Quinn and that the villainess will be the future alter ego of none other than Barbara Kean (Erin Richards).

Over the last two seasons, Barbara, who was once Jim Gordon's (Ben McKenzie) fiancee, has slowly descended into a manipulative psychopath. She is intent on starting a war between Riddler (Cory Michael Smith) and Penguin (Robin Taylor), and becoming the queen of Gotham's underworld.

Richards recently spoke to Cinema Blend about the possibility of Barbara morphing into Harley Quinn at some point in the show's future and admitted that there have been conversations about this topic.

"I think something major would have to happen to Barbara for her to fully become Harley Quinn," she said, explaining that while Babs schemes, Harley seems to be simply unhinged. Barbara constructs elaborate plans while Harley destroys for the sake of destroying.

"I think if she was to then morph into Harley Quinn, there would have to be something that happened that sort of stripped away that kind of scheming side of her," Richards said.

Meanwhile, in a Facebook Live interview with TV Guide, McKenzie revealed that he is making his directorial debut in an upcoming "Gotham" season 3 episode and that another member of the Gordon family will be introduced in it.

"There will be another Gordon family member that will be introduced," he confirmed. "Actually, that's part of the episode that I get to direct," McKenzie added.

"I'm so excited," he told TV Guide. "I start prepping right before Christmas and start shooting right after. So, very soon. I'm reading the outlines right now," he said.

The new Gordon family member is said to be Frank Gordon, Jim's estranged uncle. "Django Unchained" actor James Remar will play the role in the back half of the current season.

"Gotham" season 3 airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
