While Marvel Studios has yet to release an official announcement about a possible "Iron Man 4," the latest word from franchise star Robert Downey, Jr. is that he "could do one more."

Downey, Jr., who has starred as the titular hero in the blockbuster franchise since the first film was released in 2008, has flip-flopped over the years about the possibility of appearing in a fourth "Iron Man" stand-alone film.

However, while promoting this year's Marvel juggernaut "Captain America: Civil War," the actor said that he could possibly do at least one more "Iron Man" film.

In an interview for ABC's "Nightline" piece on "Civil War," Downey, Jr. said, "I feel like I could do one more."

However, because this bit of info was shared in the segment without any accompanying explanation, such as at which point of the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline the film would fit in, it's hard to figure out whether or not "Iron Man 4" could ever be an actual thing.

To further complicate the matter, Downey, Jr. has had a long history of conflicting statements about the film.

In October 2014, the actor was vague about the topic during an interview with Deadline.

"It all has become this thing that has to be figured out," he said. "It has come to a head, right now, where the points of departure will be."

However, during the interview, the actor also mentioned that he would consider appearing in "Iron Man 4" if his friend Mel Gibson would be hired to direct the film.

Later, in a Reddit AMA, Downey, Jr. backtracked on the statement, saying, "It was an offhanded remark to a journalist and friend. I have other projects in mind for Mel and I — sooner than later the Marvel Roster will be made public and all questions will be answered."

Then in 2015, the actor spoke to Empire magazine and implied that he is almost at the end of his stint as Iron Man. Speaking about "Civil War," Downey, Jr. pointed out that he will be 50 by the time he promotes the film.

"The clock is ticking down on the amount of memories and participation that I would allow myself and not embarrass the medium with," he said, as reported by Screen Rant.

With the MCU timeline packed to the gills until 2019, it is hard to imagine where a potential fourth "Iron Man" film could fit in. And even if the studio shifts projects around to squeeze in "Iron Man 4," it's still anyone's guess whether or not — at this point — Downey, Jr. would still be willing to star in it.
