The romantic comedy-drama TV series "Jane the Virgin" will set a different tone in the third season of the show. An upsetting and somewhat grim future lies ahead for the titular character.

Last season, Gina Rodriguez, who portrays Jane Villanueva, got married to Michael Cordero's Brett Dier. But before they could even celebrate their marriage, Michael was shot. The third season will pick up a few minutes after the end of last season's finale.

Michael's current state will affect Jane in a huge way. Creator Jennie Snyder Urman said to Entertainment Weekly, "Jane makes these big moves in terms of having to forget her own life and identity."

Viewers will be able to see how Jane is affected by this in the first episode of season 3. The previous seasons presented Jane with so many challenges, but it is in this season that she will be facing her toughest trial yet.

Rodriguez reportedly filmed a tear-jerking scene for the premiere episode. The scene was set in a bleak hospital hallway. When Jane receives the news about her husband's condition, she will be reduced to tears.

"You see her in the lowest of lows," Rodriguez told Entertainment Weekly about her character's emotional state in the upcoming season. "It's very heavy," the actress added.

Urman also told the news outlet that viewers will find out more about the characters' past. Furthermore, fans will know how learning about the past will affect the characters' present and future.

In particular, viewers will see a lot of flashbacks from the earlier days of Jane and Michael's relationship. "You're going to be learning a lot more history than you knew originally...You'll figure out how the past impacts the present," the show creator revealed.

"Jane the Virgin" season 3 will launch on Monday, Oct. 17, at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.
