'Legend of Zelda' Wii U release date news: 90-minute demos at E3 confirmed; Nintendo offering hands-on demos to 500 fans

The long wait is almost over.

In just a few weeks, Nintendo fans will finally get to try their hand at "The Legend of Zelda" for Wii U at the 2016 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). "The Legend of Zelda" is the only playable game Nintendo is showcasing at this year's E3.

According to IGN, Nintendo will be giving "Legends of Zelda" fans time to try the game out with a couple of 90-minute demos, which are set to be some of the longer demos at the expo. The event will mark the first time both the press and the fans will be able to lay their hands on the game since it was first announced in 2013.

In addition, Nintendo has announced that it is inviting 500 fans of "The Legend of Zelda" to come and try out the Wii U game after it makes its debut at E3 2016. On June 11, fans of the upcoming game will have the opportunity to sign up for a hands-on demo of "The Legend of Zelda" at a six-day event in New York City.

According to Polygon, June 11 has been dubbed "Super-Fan Signup Day," with Nintendo NY in Rockefeller Center opening its doors at 9 a.m. ET to let 500 fans register for the demos. According to Nintendo, the line will begin to form at around 7 a.m. ET on that day, so fans eager to get some face time with "The Legend of Zelda" should prepare to stand in line beginning early morning.

After registration day, the lucky fans who were able to lock in appointments will get to try out the upcoming Wii U game during Nintendo NY's store hours from June 14 to 19. Those who don't make the 500-person cutoff on June 11 may still be able to check out the game during guided demos.

For those who won't be able to make it to either E3 or the Super-Fan Signup Day, Nintendo will stream "Nintendo Treehouse Live" from E3 until June 14 at 3 p.m. ET. The livestream is said to have gameplay footage of "The Legend of Zelda" as well as interviews with some of the game's developers.

"The Legend of Zelda" is slated for a 2017 release on Wii U.
