After fighting a long battle with osteoporosis and other illnesses, American actor, screenwriter and film producer L. M. Kit Carson passed away at 73.

The exact cause of his death was uncertain, but his wife told the New York Times that Carson had been ill with pneumonia.

A Dallas native who was known in the independent film world, he was a writer for the Rolling Stone, Esquire and other magazines. Together with G. William Smith, he was also the founder of the USA Film Festival, which showcases American films every year in Dallas.

He became a regular participant of the Sundance Film Festival, where he gave general advice for filmmakers. He was recognized for helping the directing career of Wes Anderson and Luke and Owen Wilson in the "Blue Rocket," a 1996 film.

Carson is best known for having written for the film "Paris, Texas" in 1984, which won the approval of many film enthusiasts. He also co-directed the 1971 documentary "The American Dreamer." His other screenplay works included those for "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" and "Breathless," which starred Richard Gere.

One of his most recent works was a series of short documentaries filmed in Africa, which were aired in 2011 at the Sundance Channel.

Despite getting applauded for his work, his wife, Mrs. Hargrave, said Carson "rarely did anything for the money of it."

"He did things for the 'aha!' of it. And nobody could ever convince him he was wrong," she added.

A life well lived, indeed.
