'Marco Polo' season 3 release date: Production may be delayed

Kublai Khan's (Benedict Wong) death may be imminent in the rumored third season of "Marco Polo." | YouTube/Netflix US & Canada

A season 3 renewal is yet to be confirmed for Netflix's historical drama "Marco Polo" and fans who have eagerly been waiting for favorable news about the show may have just been given a reason to keep hoping.

The show's creator John Fusco recently shared a tweet that seemed to suggest he is hard at work producing new materials for the show. The tweet features Fusco's Labrador watching the falling snow through a window. It has been hashtagged "#amwriting" and was addressed to several people including Leonard Wu, who played Orus in "Marco Polo" season 2.

Although Orus ultimately died, Fusco's tweet sent fans wondering if he might come back in some capacity when the rumored third season rolls around.

Current rumors are saying that a season 3 may indeed be in the horizon, but that its release could be delayed by a couple of factors. First are the issues regarding the show's high production cost, which could force it to take a backseat in favor of Netflix's other shows like "Stranger Things" and "Narcos" which have already been confirmed for new seasons next year. This means that should "Marco Polo" be green-lit for season 3, production may not begin until mid-2017, and the eventual release may be scheduled no sooner than 2018.

Another rumored roadblock to season 3 is Benedict Wong's tight schedule now that he has reportedly signed on to appear in more upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movies after his portrayal of Wong, the titular character's trusted sidekick and valet in "Doctor Strange." Benedict also plays Kublai Khan, the fifth Great Khan of the Mongol Empire in "Marco Polo." There have been speculations about his possible death in the hands of a warrior priest if and when season 3 airs.

The complete seasons 1 and 2 of "Marco Polo" are available for streaming on Netflix.
