'NCIS' season 14 spoilers, plot updates 2016: New main characters expected to inject energy to CBS' flagship series

"NCIS" season 14 will show off new characters when it returns to small screens a few weeks from now. This is the first time the show will have a "major facelift" after 13 seasons, and fans are excited to find out how the show will pan out.

Michael Weatherly, who played fan-favorite character Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo, has bid goodbye to the show, and in his stead are three new characters who are expected to inject a new brand of energy into the show. DiNozzo's exit left Special Agent Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) with the task of rebuilding his team, and now he's ready to show his new team off.

"NCIS" season 14's premiere episode titled "Rogue" will see Special Agent Alex Quinn (Jennifer Esposito) coming in to Gibbs' domain to ask why he's rejected all the candidates she sent in as DiNozzo's replacement. That much is apparent in the teaser for the said episode.

Gibbs and Quinn have known each other for some time, and the latter has been working as an NCIS training instructor for several years, but her visit to Gibbs' squad room will make her change her mind and return to the field. Apparently, something happened to her as a field agent, prompting her to shift to teaching, and fans are hoping the upcoming installment will somehow explore that angle.

Wilmer Valderrama is another one of the three new faces to join Gibbs' team. The "That 70s Show" alum will play special agent Nick Torres. He's an undercover agent who has been presumed dead. It looks like the very first case Team Gibbs will investigate in the upcoming season will lead them straight to Torres, so that's another angle worth anticipating.

Duane Henry, who appeared in a recurring in season 13, has been promoted to series regular. Hence, fans will get to see a lot of MI6 Officer Clayton Reeves in the upcoming installment.

Meanwhile, Tim McGee (Sean Murray) will finally be proposing to Delilah Fielding (Margo Harshman) when "NCIS" season 14 returns. According to reports, the two will tie the knot before the season finale.

However, aside from that major change to McGee's personal life, he will also be seeing exciting changes in his career. It looks like he will be promoted to senior field agent in season 14 as replacement for DiNozzo.

"He has taken over that mantle, and with that comes tremendous responsibility," showrunner Gary Glasberg tells TV Guide in an interview.

"NCIS" season 14 will premiere on Sept. 20, Tuesday, at 8 p.m. on CBS.
