'Red Dead Redemption 2' release date latest news: Sequel to be titled 'Legends of the West'?

Following the commercial success and critical praise received by "Red Dead Redemption" since it came out in 2010, it is no wonder that fans of the open world western action/adventure video game have been impatiently waiting for news of a possible sequel.

But though Rockstar Games has kept mum about the future of its "Red Dead" franchise, rumors have been swirling for years about a possible "Red Dead Redemption 2" and its impending release.

Recent reports now indicate that the "Red Dead Redemption 2" release is imminent and that it will likely drop sometime next year.

Interestingly, there has also been reports of the highly anticipated sequel's title, with Fraghero claiming that an anonymous informant has said that "Red Dead Redemption 2" will be called "Legends of the West."

According to the outlet, it received an email from an unnamed reader who claimed that "Red Dead Redemption 2" has been in development for the last four years and that it is titled "Red Dead Redemption 2: Legends of the West."

Fraghero's source also reportedly said that he got this information from a former employee of Rockstar Games. In addition, the informant reported that an HD remake of "Red Dead Redemption," the second installment in the "Red Dead" franchise, is currently being developed for next-generation consoles and is scheduled to be released by the end of 2016.

Finally, the Fraghero reader said that Rockstar Games will announce "Red Dead Redemption 2" this year and release it sometime in fall 2017. The new installment will reportedly come with more than one playable character and an expanded world.

While this information is unverified, it should be noted that Take-Two Interactive, the distributor of the "Red Dead" franchise confirmed earlier this year in a company earnings report that it is working hard on projects that it will be revealing soon.

"Rockstar Games is of course hard at work on some exciting future projects that will be revealed soon," the company said.

Fans have been theorizing that this could mean that a new "Red Dead Redemption" or "Grand Theft Auto" installment is in the works.

In its earnings report, Take-Two confirmed its entire release schedule for the fiscal year, which means that no new Rockstar Games offerings will be coming out between now and April 2017.
