'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 air date, plot spoilers news: Stefan and Elena to reunite?

Just a few more weeks left until "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 premieres on the small screen. Because it is already the last installment of the series, fans are excited to discover what's in store for the characters and how things will end.

Many are still waiting for a confirmation of Nina Dobrev's return to reprise her role as Elena Gilbert. Until now, there is no word yet on whether she will make a comeback for the final season.

Earlier reports mentioned that Dobrev will be back and if speculations are believed, her character could be reuniting not with Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) but with her first love, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). As detailed in a report, Elena could awaken from her long slumber and find out that Damon has turned to the dark side.

She will be heartbroken but will find comfort from Stefan. The two could rekindle their love for each other although this could mean that Caroline Forbes (Candice King) will be affected. Caroline and Stefan have finally reunited before season 7 closed.

But if Stefan dumps Caroline for Elena, there is a chance that Caroline will reconnect with Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan). The pair has been a fan favorite couple and seeing them together again will surely make several viewers happy. Nothing is confirmed though so it's best to take reports with a pinch of salt.

In other news, Kat Graham, who plays Bonnie Bennett, spoke to E! News about the upcoming villain in season 8. As fans already know, season 7 introduced the mysterious and creepy big baddie who lives in a vault. Apparently, it's going to be a female antagonist.

"The villain, as of right now, is this amazing female badass. It's going to be good," Graham teased.

Damon has also been taken over by evil so he is going to be a troublemaker when the series returns.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 will premiere on Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
