It appears that "True Detective" season 3 is still on the table for HBO, but fans might have to wait for a couple of years before they get to see the hit anthology.

Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of the series, is currently working on a new project for HBO with the highest paid actor himself, Robert Downey Jr.

It is reportedly a reboot of the 1950s-60s legal drama "Perry Mason," whose titular character is someone the "Iron Man" actor always wanted to play.

The "Perry Mason" reboot is said to be the project that prevented Pizzolatto from writing the story for "True Detective" season 3. As HBO head of programming Casey Bloys said, the writer will be supervising only.

"I talked to Nic about it and both Nic and HBO are open to another season. I don't think Nic has a take and he's working on some other projects," Bloys said during the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

"We're open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It's a valuable franchise, it's not dead, we just don't have a take for a third season yet," he continued.

However, the takeaway here is that "True Detective" is indeed "not dead" and HBO is working to bring it back. Of course, it might take a while.

Pizzolatto inked a deal with HBO up to the year 2018, but it appears that he will be consumed with his project with Downey. Either way, it is expected that around that time, "True Detective" season 3 might arrive.

"True Detective" premiered in 2015 starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. It was a real big hit, but it quickly plummeted in the second season starring Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Will Farrell, and Taylor Kitsch.

Despite the star power, the show did not resonate well with fans as much as the first one, which is why it was rumored to be axed by HBO.
