'Pokemon Go & Sin No More!': Westboro Baptist Church fights back against 'Pokemon Go' LGBT supporters
Westboro Baptist Church and some LGBTQ supporters find themselves in a virtual battle through the new augmented reality game, "Pokemon Go."
One player saw that the property of the church, which is known for its aggressive anti-gay stance, was marked as a gym on the game.
The user quickly claimed the gym through a Clefairy named LoveIsLove.
"Pokemon Go" users quickly began to troll the church using LoveIsLove Clefairy, with many of them posting comments on social media.
However, Westboro Baptist Church decided it would not take things sitting down.
It hired a Pokemon named Jigglypuff to "deal with the sodomite Clefairy," it said in a tweet that shows the pink character holding out a placard saying, "Repent or perish."
In another tweet, the church, in reference to its using "Pokemon Go" to address critics, said it is "transforming silly things" in order to preach the gospel to "Bible-dumb rebels."
The church earned various reactions for the "Pokemon Go" battle against LGBTQ advocates. Some people supported it while others criticized it.
A church elder, Steve Drain, explained that the church's move shows how it strives "to speak whatever language is being spoken."
He said they are taking the opportunity to use a game character to send its message to many people.
"Pokemon Go and sin no more. That's what the Lord Jesus Christ said," Drain said.
Drain further added that because of the game, the location of Westboro Baptist Church "will be memorialized throughout eternity."
He said they will not stop saying that homosexuality is wrong even though many people are angered by it.
Westboro became the subject of public ire in recent weeks after it staged protests at the funerals of the victims of the massacre at the Pulse gay night club in Orlando. The Orlando massacre left 49 people dead and many others injured.
