'Spider-Man' spin-off release date, news: 'Venom' slated to premiere in October 2018

Spider-Man's nemesis, Venom, will be getting a spin-off film, which will be shown in 2018.

Sony recently made this announcement, along with the statement that they are targeting Oct. 5, 2018 as its release date. The schedule was originally set for "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 2." It has since been moved to Oct. 19.

Venom is an alien symbiote that possesses humans to use as hosts, giving the body shapeshifting abilities. The creature is also able to demonstrate the abilities of Spider-Man, who served as its first host.

No actor has been cast for the titular role yet. However, it is expected that Tom Holland will be appearing there as Spider-Man. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner are already on board to write the script for this film, while Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Amy Pascal will serve as the producers. Gamespot reported that Alex Kurtzman, who wrote the "Amazing Spider-Man," was going to direct the spinoff, but this was later debunked.

This will not be the first time that Venom will appear on the big screen. He also appeared in 2007's "Spider-Man 3" film, originally possessing Peter Parker (Toby Maguire) and then Eddie Brock (Topher Grace).

Meanwhile, the standalone "Spider-Man: Homecoming" movie will be shown in cinemas starting July 7. This is the first film wherein Sony, Disney, and Marvel Studios will be sharing rights to the film. Sony originally had sole rights to the film series, but later on, the company agreed to share it with the two other companies. This allowed the Spider-Man character to be brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making his debut in "Captain America: Civil War." Although it was Sony that made the announcement about the "Venom" spin-off, no word has been given if this is another joint project with Disney and Marvel Studios.
