'Stranger Things' season 2 spoilers, news: The Upside Down to be explored more in upcoming season
The first season of "Stranger Things" revealed that there is a mysterious parallel universe to the world as people know it. Season 2, which is set one year after the events of the first, will reveal more information about this realm.
Kyle Dixon, one of the showrunners of "Stranger Things," said during the South by Southwest Conference that "The Upside Down will be more of a place... You'll spend more time."
However, this does not necessarily mean that any of the characters will be venturing back into the nightmarish world. Dixon's fellow showrunner, Matt Duffer, said previously that: "Will seems to be seeing images from the Upside Down - the question is whether they're real or not. So it seems like he's having some sort of post-traumatic stress disorder."
In the first season, Will (Noah Schnapp) got trapped in the Upside Down, although his mother, Joyce (Winona Ryder), and Jim Hopper, the town sheriff (David Harbour), managed to rescue him. The return of the alternate universe also means more monsters will break into the real world, one of which was revealed in the Superbowl trailer of the show. However, not all of these creatures may be bad, as one is rumored to become Dustin's (Gaten Matarazzo) new pet.
All of the main cast members will be reprising their roles for season 2, including Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the telekinetic human weapon Eleven, who might be trapped in the Upside Down. Unfortunately, her villainous foster father, the "Bad Man" (Matthew Modine) is also set to return, although it is unclear if he will be revived or if he will only be seen in flashbacks, given that he died in the season 1 finale.
The cast will also see new additions. Sadie Sink will take on the role of 13-year-old Max. Dacre Montgomery will play Max's brother, Billy, and Linnea Berthelsen will play Roman, a character shrouded in mystery. Sean Astin is also joining the group as Bob, who was Joyce's high school classmate and who she is currently dating.
"Stranger Things" will return on Oct. 31 on Netflix.
