14 Babies Quarantined Following Measles Case at Calif. Daycare
Health officials in California have reported that 14 infants were put under quarantine after a child, less than a year old, was confirmed to be the youngest victim of the recent measles outbreak.
According to ABC News, the child was enrolled in the Samohi (Santa Monica High School) Infant Toddler Center for daycare. The infant is too young to receive the full vaccination against measles.
Since discovering the child's infection, health officials have quarantined the Infant Toddler Center until further notice. Officials have also put 14 other young children who attended the center under quarantine to be monitored for measles.
"At least four or five of them are too young to receive their full set of boosters," Malibu Unified School District spokeswoman Gail Pinsker said in a statement in reference to the children in the daycare.
According to Reuters, a freshman basketball coach at the high school was diagnosed with measles last month, although Pinsker has argued that the two cases are not connected.
"There is concern in the community over this. This is a concerning disease," she said. "Over the last couple weeks we've encouraged families to get students immunized."
"The district is trying to stay on top this and being as transparent as possible," Pinsker said. "The health and safety of our students and staff is our first priority."
A recent outbreak of measles that originated in California in December has caused over 100 cases to spread to 14 states. Over the weekend, both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and President Barack Obama issued statements advising parents to have their children vaccinated to prevent a more large-scale spread of the disease.
